Find out more about visiting the Museum! School Trip We just wanted to say thank you for making our trip to the mining museum yesterday so special! You could not have been more helpful and accommodating to us and our filming! The guides were so knowledgeable and the children learnt a lot and also the man on the front desk was very welcoming and helpful! Sheer Class We saw many of the original pithead buildings, lifts, gantries, equipment etc used in the mine which you walk through during the tour making the whole experience absolutely real. The accompanying commentary on the live tours is given by ex-miners who had actually been down the pits all their working lives (John Kane in our case) which is a startlingly effective way of bringing home the human element involved in mining - oral history in perfect action - and all this is backed up by a really excellent traditional modern museum display which can be seen before or after the tour. This really was sheer class and the highlight of our week in Edinburgh! Fabulous! I don't normally send emails for matters like this but I felt I had to tell you what amazing staff you have. From the receptionists to the tour guides, they were fantastic. We had a tour from the lovely Tom Young and spoke with John Anderson in great length after our tour. These gentlemen were FABULOUS with us all!!!! Their knowledge and their telling of stories really made it all feel real.... My sons were engrossed the whole way round. They both took time with us and really made the day. The museum provides a great day out for all ages! We're based at one of the finest surviving examples of a Victorian colliery in Europe, the Lady Victoria Colliery at Newtongrange, just nine miles south of Edinburgh. Visitors to the museum will marvel at the sheer size of the place, be astounded by the engineering brilliance behind all the machinery and retrace the footsteps and struggles of the thousands of miners and their families before them.
